Simili urundai/Sesame peanut balls

Simili urundai - Sweetened sesame balls with peanuts and jaggery. This is a traditional sweet which is nutritious as well as healthy. Elli or sesame seeds are high in calcium while peanuts have high protein content.The balls are sweetened with jaggery which contains iron, potassium, magnesium in moderation. It is an excellent snack for school going children and was recommended by our doctor for my son.




Key ingredients:

Sesame seeds - Black ones are best since they are unrefined.

Jaggery - I used muzhu vellam(round ones). I've not tried it with achhu vellam(block).

Peanuts - Unsalted variety is used .

Shelf life:

Stays good for 1 month if stored in an air tight container.

Equipments used: Fry pan/Kadai,blender, mortar and pestle.

Recipe:

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

Black sesame seeds - 1/2 cup

Peanuts -  -1/4 cup

Jaggery - 3/4 cup

Directions:

1.Dry Roast sesame seeds till they crackle. Transfer them to a plate.



2.Dry roast peanuts. add to the sesame seeds.


3.Allow everything to cool down.



4. Break jaggery into pieces. Now transfer everything to a blender.

5. Powder everything till sesame seeds starts to leave oil.

6.Transfer the contents to a bowl.

7. Break the lumps. Take the mixture in your hand  and start shaping them into balls, by pressing firmly. Press and shape till the mixture start oozing out oil in your hands.

8. Store them in an airtight container.




Note:

  • Alternatively, you can add peanuts to the sesame seeds,and saute together. Lower the flame, when sesame starts crackling , add peanuts , saute till peanuts are hot to touch. Switch off the flame.Allow to Cool.
  • It is necessary to shape the mixture into balls while it is warm . Otherwise it will become difficult to shape them. In such a case, warm the mixture in the microwave or in the stove-top, and then shape them into balls.

  • You can add 1 or 2 cardamoms while grinding.
